AboutX-Height Design

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Hello. My name is Tito Chazo and over 20 years ago I decided that 3 things were always going to be true with me from now on: I wanted to work from home, I loved working for myself and that I loved design even more. With that in mind, I decided to start my own design agency that would contract with several advertising and design agencies thoughout the country doing mostly print design and logo work (the internet was still in its infancy so there wasn't a whole lot of "interactive" or web work at the time). That concept eventually evolved into doing more and more online and website work as well as keeping my foot "in the door" of print and logo work. I was also doing quite a bit of typographic work at the time as well, hence the name "X-Height Design," which comes from the typographic definition, referring to the height of a lower-case x, considered characteristic of a given typeface or script.

One very important piece of advice I received from my dad many years ago was "Don't learn just one skill in your field- learn them all!" And with that simple piece of advice, I started a long path that lead to me learning and absorbing everything there was about graphic design and all of its associated fields. I studied how to operate a 6 color Heidelberg press, became a film stripper, a photo stylist, a paste up artist, worked on a Quantel Paintbox doing digital retouching before there was even Photoshop, I learned the craft of woodcut letters, became a typesetter and then eventually an art director. You name it, I did it. I'm happiest when I'm doing a lot of different things. But I’ve also been around long enough to know that this business is about people and relationships as much as it is about color and type and a 2-column grid. Still reading? Ok. Good. Now let’s get to work.

Relationships

I have worked with companies large and small. Some of my more well known clients via design agencies include: Autodesk, Cisco, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, EMC and VMWare among many others. Along with my extensive skills, I tend to work in three basic areas:

  • Consulting

Sometimes all a project needs is a little TLC and some guidance and a nudge in the right direction. I have consulted on a variety of projects giving my advice in the fields of art direction, UI and project management.

  • Graphic Design

The "nityy gritty, roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty" kind of work. I can design it and produce a final deliverable in any format you need - whether it's for print, video or online.

  • Web Design

This can be a wide scope or a limited venture - whatever is called for. This can range from a full, turn key project that is a full e-commerce website with a backend database system to a simple product launch with a limited shelf life and simple interface.
